7 Mindsets God Breaks to Build Your Confidence

Have you ever looked at yourself and thought, “I’ll never be confident like other people”? I used to feel that way too. For years, I struggled with shyness, self-doubt, and the fear of not being enough. But then God began to take me on a journey—not just of building confidence, but of transforming the way I saw myself through His eyes.
Confidence in Christ isn’t about puffing yourself up or pretending you have it all together. It’s about allowing God to strip away mindsets that keep you small, afraid, and stuck—so you can step boldly into the purpose He created you for.
In my recent video, “7 Ways God Builds Your Confidence,” I share the mindsets God had to break off me in order to grow into the woman He called me to be. And the truth is—He wants to do the same for you.
Here are the seven mindsets God helps us overcome:
1. The Self-Centered Mindset
When life is all about me, myself, and I, we can’t truly serve or bless others. God’s character is self-giving love, and as we learn to live like Jesus, confidence grows through serving others with joy and purpose.
2. The Double-Minded Spirit
Confidence requires stability. But when we’re “one foot in and one foot out,” constantly second-guessing ourselves, we can’t move forward. God wants to give us clarity through prayer and commitment so that we stand firm in our calling.
3. The Lazy or Reluctant Mindset
True confidence comes from stewardship—showing up and giving your best even when it’s hard. Laziness robs us of growth, but God gives us strength to work diligently, not for man’s approval, but as if we’re working for Him.
4. The People-Pleasing Mindset
Living for everyone’s approval leaves no room for God’s assignment. Confidence grows when we stop saying “yes” to distractions and start saying “yes” to God’s will—even when it costs us relationships or comfort.
5. The Settling Mindset
God’s plans for us are always higher than what we’d choose for ourselves. But when we settle for less—whether in relationships, opportunities, or our spiritual life—we deny His best. Confidence grows when we trust that His promises are worth pursuing.
6. The Ungrateful & Entitlement Mindset
Complaining, comparing, or feeling like we “deserve” certain things blocks confidence. Gratitude, on the other hand, shifts our perspective to God’s generosity and reminds us that every blessing is a gift, not a guarantee.
7. The Spirit of Doubt
Nothing steals confidence like doubt. But faith—believing that God can and will move in your life—frees you to act boldly. Doubt says, “What if I fail?” Faith says, “What if God shows up?”
Final Thoughts
Confidence isn’t built overnight. It’s built as God reshapes our thinking, one mindset at a time. If you’re struggling with any of these, you’re not alone—I’ve walked this road too. But the beautiful truth is that as you surrender these mindsets to God, He will replace them with boldness, clarity, and peace.
